The King Street Laundry Installation (part of Longing is Just Our Word for Knowing*)* transformed a neighborhood laundromat into a site for art, conversation, and community care. Combining painting, installation, photography, and oral histories, the project grew from my ongoing collaboration with residents, affordable housing advocates, and service providers to explore how lived experiences of housing shape personal definitions of home. Community engagement extended beyond the installation through on-site drawing activities, tenant skill-building workshops, outreach and resource sharing with CVOEO's Community Outreach Resource & Engagement (CORA) team, multilingual Financial Futures workshops, and a public presentation, Vocabulary of Home, during Fair Housing Month. The project also fostered a lasting partnership between King Street Laundry and CVOEO, resulting in free Wednesday laundry access for community members experiencing homelessness.
